Walking Schedule 2008

Breathing Space Outdoors, based in picturesque Comrie, Perthshire, offers walking from

gentle, low level to high level and everything in between. Experienced local guides with

knowledge of the local environment and history lead the walks. Nordic walking is also

now available.

High level walking

High level guided walking that takes us through mountain passes and over some local tops and 'munros'( mountains over 3000 feet high) letting you sample beautiful scenery and wild places. In the autumn, there is a chance to see and hear the unforgettable sound of stags gathering for the annual rut. We will move off the beaten track taking less traveled routes up the mountains ensuring we are far from the madding crowds.

Gentle to intermediate

Enjoy walking in beautiful countryside through ancient oak woodlands, past lovely waterfalls and lochs.  There is time to explore the natural history of the area looking at the geology, geography, flora, fauna and wildlife as well as considering the social history of the area. There is also time to stop for coffee at the end of a walk.

These are shorter days of walking

What is Nordic walking?

Nordic walking is fitness walking using specially designed walking poles.

Originating in Finland – as a way for cross-country skiers to train in summer, Nordic walking has taken off all over Europe. The nordic fitness craze isset to take off in Britain too.

Nordic walking exercises the whole body using 90% of the muscles in the body and can burn over 45%  more calories than ordinary walking.   The upper body gets a workout with the big muscles around the shoulders, neck and arms also being worked properly.  Tension in these muscles is released and the spine is strengthened - this can help to ease back pain.

As well as improving your endurance, strengthening and toning the muscles in the upper body, arms and legs, and releasing muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, Nordic walking also provides an excellent cardiovascular workout.  You get your heart beating an average 5-17 times more per minute than normal walking.

Simply using poles means you consume about 20% more calories than normal walking, and if you combine this with the effects of walking faster, you can actually burn up to 46% more energy than when you walk normally, according to some research.

Many of these benefits can be put down to the use of poles. These improve your posture and help you to walk faster, by propelling your body forward thus increasing the length of your stride.

Sunshine and maps

Women CAN read maps 2007

Five courses ran successfully this year thanks to some good publicity requiring more courses being put on.  Great fun was had by all. Look forward to hearing about everyones exploits.

Women CAN read maps 2006

Two courses ran this year - the first had great weather, the second was not so fortunate. Once again women threw themselves whole heartedly into the experience and great time was had by all (read what they had to say).

Report of Women can read maps - Navigation Course

The future women world explorers were greeted by Fran with strong cups of coffee.  This

was to help them recover from their journeys from Edinburgh and Linlithgow.

Then the work began in earnest.

We shared experiences of using maps and getting lost and learnt some tricks

about maps.  After a few indoor games we ventured out to find out how to

judge distance.

Then off into the great outdoors to put it all into practice.

Lets check how far we have come.........

and soon we were striding out confidently for a......

lunch stop in glorious sunshine.

Following a well earned break we

headed off to check out what the

contours around us meant.

Then we each took a turn to leading.

After all this hard work we were ready for another break.

But even when resting we were so gripped and intrigued by the maps that

we wanted to keep looking at them.

Some even postponed their break by a few minutes whilst they matched up all the hills around us... well that is what they told us.

They were pretty pleased with themselves.

Still, we found the energy to go to the top of the Melville Monument behind

Comrie and work out what was around us.  The views were fabulous.  We

could see Ben Vorlich, Ben Halton and Morbheinn, Loch Earn as well as

Comrie to Crieff.  Then we headed down for well earned meals and rest - ready

to take on tomorrows challenges.

Fran assured us that working out where you are in the woods is like being in

the mist on the hill tops.  We are glad we remembered answers to the symbols

quiz from yesterday and had no trouble finding out what a footbridge is on a

map.  Easy work.

Then time for a well earned rest again before heading off.

We know were we are.  We are starting to get pretty good at this.

It is a lovely day again and we see some primroses also appreciating the better weather.  Great views about us as we great ready for the biggest challenge.  The compass.

But we get the hang of this and soon head off trying out our latest technique with confidence.

It is like magic. It works.....................

We reach the top of Creag Each with views up towards Ben Chonzie.

Time for a rest and sun bathe.

Then is down and head for Comrie via streams and waterfalls.  Tired but satisfied that we

know CAN read maps and with practice will be confident map readers.  World here we come.
